Book 1

Rush by Maya Banks

In the first book of the Breathless Trilogy, Banks introduces us to Gabe, Jace, and Ash - three best friends who are some of the wealthiest hotel tycoons in the country. They are smart, sexy, rich, and dominant in every relationship they possess - business, familial, and even romantic.

Though all three of these delicious men are present in Rush, the story focuses on Gabe and his infatuation with his best friend's little sister, Mia. Despite resisting his attraction to Mia for years, he can no longer hold back and sweeps her off her feet in a not so fairytale way.

Mia has always had a crush on Gabe despite their 14 year old age difference and him being Jace's best friend. When Gabe pursues her, there's no way she's going to let his antics fall by the wayside. They just have to be careful with their sexual proclivities both in and out of the office so that Jace and Ash don't find out.

Their relationship is intense, demanding, obsessive, secretive, and very inappropriate - but whoa my lanta - I was fanning myself by the end of the prologue. Hello, hot and bothered, I don't believe we've met before in the literary world.

But what happens when the arrangement becomes full of emotions, love, and adoration? Should Mia and Gabe tell Jace (and even Ash)? Should they embrace the possibility of a future and a relationship? Or end it?

The Good, Bad, and Everything Else:
  •  Good:
    • Attention grabbing from the very beginning
    • Stellar character development - especially when it comes to supplementary characters like Jace and Ash. We get to see them in the context of the office, hanging out with Gabe, bonding with Mia, and even a glimpse into their own relationships.
    • Well edited
    • Dripping with sexy men who are easy to love despite their controlling attitudes
    • Mia Crestwell (Jace's sister and Gabe's lover) is spunky and full of life. She has quite the personality and isn't going to take crap from anyone - even Gabe. Though she does compromise and show a slight submissive side, she definitely has no problems speaking up for herself or disagreeing with Gabe, her brother, or Ash.
    • The sex scenes are not drawn out or redundant, but very appreciated.
    • Despite Gabe's mistakes, he knows when to up his game and work for redemption.
  • Bad:
    • Technically there was nothing "bad" about this book, but there were times when I had heart palpitations (not good ones).Without giving away too much...
      • 1) The ladies gossiping in the office
      • 2) Ash and Jace finding out Mia is working as Gabe's assistant (awkward, awkward)
      • 3) The Paris trip: Gabe's reaches a whole new level of asshole and Charles Willis is now enemy number 1 (Gabe is a close second - why? Read the book yourself, it's totally worth it).
      • 4) The return of Charles Willis after the Paris trip (Gulp, double gulp, I smell serious drama!)
      • 5) Ash and Jace finding out about Mia and Gabe's relationship in the worst (and I mean THE VERY WORST) way possible. HUMILIATING for all parties involved.
  • Everything Else:
    • This book is definitely for adult readers. I definitely would put it in the same category of smut as 50 Shades (and oh did I love me some 50 Shades of Grey).
    • The storyline is original and although there is no cliffhanger, there is potential to see the plot being picked up in the next book, Fever
    • I loved the relationship development between Gabe and Mia. I definitely cannot wait to see more of them in the next books!
Rating: 9/10
