Book 2

Fever by Maya Banks

The sexy trio is back, but this time instead of Gabe, we get sacked with the brooding, handsome Jace Crestwell.

Sidenote: If you watch Vampire Diaries (yes, I admit it - guilty pleasure), you know know that Stephen is the brooding champion of all things normal and paranormal. Stephan's brooding doesn't even hold a candle to Jace in that department.

Jace is probably the most serious of his friends, Gabe and Ash. It's hard to believe that he actually has threesomes with Ash and another woman on a regular basis. Mind officially blown. Although he has never seen his behavior as odd or unusual, the night he and Ash proposition Bethany, a server at Gabe and Mia's engagement party - the world gets turned upside down.

Bethany is the girl for Jace. He knew it right away and he knew at that moment in time, he didn't want to share her with Ash. And yet the idiot still went through with a threesome. Jace, you must be outside your mind! Luckily for him, Bethany shares a mutual attraction with Jace despite having Ash as the third wheel. The night is steamy to say the least and then before morning, Bethany disappears.

Two weeks later Jace is a raging lunatic, turning over every corner of the city in hopes of finding Bethany. When he does, he finds out 1) she's homeless 2) she's a former pill popper 3) though it was beat around the bush, she was pretty much a sex addict 4) she doesn't have a family - except for a friend, Jack, she claims as a brother who in reality has no brotherly intentions 5) she's never had a Christmas tree before.

Jace introduces Bethany into his world of dominance - although it is much more scaled down that Gabe. Bethany is a natural born submissive woman and eager to please Jace. However, Jace's anger tends to get the best of him in situations that are less than desirable. His mouth runs away with him one too many times and I tell you what, there would be permanent slap marks on his face if he talked to me how he talked to Bethany.

When tragedy strikes and Bethany's life is at stake, how will Jace ever be able to make things right? Will he lose her before he gets the chance?

The Good, Bad, and Everything Else:
  • Good
    •  Bethany viewpoint of being homeless. I feel like I walked 10 miles in her shoes and felt the same hopelessness she did.
    • Jace's persistence in his search for Bethany - definitely admirable.
    • Ash and Bethany's "reintroduction" at their friends Christmas party. Ash gets major points in my book for his respect, cool demeanor (in a good way), and overall friendliness. As heinously awkward as the situation was, he rolled with the punches and tried to make Bethany feel at ease.
    • Mia taking Bethany under her wing and pulling into her circle of girlfriends. There is instant friendship and understanding between them.
    • Fuck-me heels - though I would never wear anything more elevating than flats, this book convinced me of the perks of owning a good set ;)
    • Jace is a good man to Jack despite Jack's mistake that almost cost Bethany her life.
  • Bad
    • Jace's temper and his inability to control what is spewed out of his mouth. Keep it together man!
    • Jack, Bethany's "brother" and friend - he really is bad news. It's a miracle is actions didn't get Bethany killed years prior to her meeting Jace.
  • Everything Else
    • I really liked this book - more than what I thought. Although Jace isn't the type of guy I would be attracted to (brooding is definitely not something that gets me all giddy), I did like his story. Past the layers of anger, insecurity, doubt, and mistrust, he still has a heart of gold and eyes only for Bethany.
    • We get to see the subtle repercussions of the Paris trip from hell as read in Rush. Charles Willis' partnership was supposed to solidify a hotel deal in Paris with Jace, Gabe, and Ash has suddenly been severed. The three of them struggle to keep the deal alive although Jace and Ash have no idea why it has gone south.

365 Books in 365 Days

Challenge accepted!

The life of a teacher is no simple feat. Between grading, lesson planning, meetings, discipline, emails, and a whole hoopla of political school bullhonky, it's hard to keep from stressing out.

I decided in order to keep my sanity vanishing with the wind, I've decided to rekindle my love for reading. Not only that, but I'm going to read as many books this year as there are days - starting January 1.

Oh, so you realized that it's halfway through February. I must be out of my mind --- see why it's important to reclaim my sanity? Technically I've been following through with my challenge, I just haven't been forthcoming with a new blog until about 3 minutes ago.

I'll get you all up to speed on the amazing books I've been reading so far and hopefully in a few days time, I'll be synced up with the days.

Book 1

Rush by Maya Banks

In the first book of the Breathless Trilogy, Banks introduces us to Gabe, Jace, and Ash - three best friends who are some of the wealthiest hotel tycoons in the country. They are smart, sexy, rich, and dominant in every relationship they possess - business, familial, and even romantic.

Though all three of these delicious men are present in Rush, the story focuses on Gabe and his infatuation with his best friend's little sister, Mia. Despite resisting his attraction to Mia for years, he can no longer hold back and sweeps her off her feet in a not so fairytale way.

Mia has always had a crush on Gabe despite their 14 year old age difference and him being Jace's best friend. When Gabe pursues her, there's no way she's going to let his antics fall by the wayside. They just have to be careful with their sexual proclivities both in and out of the office so that Jace and Ash don't find out.

Their relationship is intense, demanding, obsessive, secretive, and very inappropriate - but whoa my lanta - I was fanning myself by the end of the prologue. Hello, hot and bothered, I don't believe we've met before in the literary world.

But what happens when the arrangement becomes full of emotions, love, and adoration? Should Mia and Gabe tell Jace (and even Ash)? Should they embrace the possibility of a future and a relationship? Or end it?

The Good, Bad, and Everything Else:
  •  Good:
    • Attention grabbing from the very beginning
    • Stellar character development - especially when it comes to supplementary characters like Jace and Ash. We get to see them in the context of the office, hanging out with Gabe, bonding with Mia, and even a glimpse into their own relationships.
    • Well edited
    • Dripping with sexy men who are easy to love despite their controlling attitudes
    • Mia Crestwell (Jace's sister and Gabe's lover) is spunky and full of life. She has quite the personality and isn't going to take crap from anyone - even Gabe. Though she does compromise and show a slight submissive side, she definitely has no problems speaking up for herself or disagreeing with Gabe, her brother, or Ash.
    • The sex scenes are not drawn out or redundant, but very appreciated.
    • Despite Gabe's mistakes, he knows when to up his game and work for redemption.
  • Bad:
    • Technically there was nothing "bad" about this book, but there were times when I had heart palpitations (not good ones).Without giving away too much...
      • 1) The ladies gossiping in the office
      • 2) Ash and Jace finding out Mia is working as Gabe's assistant (awkward, awkward)
      • 3) The Paris trip: Gabe's reaches a whole new level of asshole and Charles Willis is now enemy number 1 (Gabe is a close second - why? Read the book yourself, it's totally worth it).
      • 4) The return of Charles Willis after the Paris trip (Gulp, double gulp, I smell serious drama!)
      • 5) Ash and Jace finding out about Mia and Gabe's relationship in the worst (and I mean THE VERY WORST) way possible. HUMILIATING for all parties involved.
  • Everything Else:
    • This book is definitely for adult readers. I definitely would put it in the same category of smut as 50 Shades (and oh did I love me some 50 Shades of Grey).
    • The storyline is original and although there is no cliffhanger, there is potential to see the plot being picked up in the next book, Fever
    • I loved the relationship development between Gabe and Mia. I definitely cannot wait to see more of them in the next books!
